Today: Union Rally to Support Secure Local Jobs for Canberra

Unions will rally today at the ACT Assembly to support the proposed Secure Local Jobs Package.

The Secure Local Jobs Package includes a range of new measures to protect the rights of employees of ACT Government contractors. The Package was a key election commitment made by ACT Labor in 2016 to ensure the ACT Government only procures goods and services from contractors with the highest safety and ethical labour standards.

The rally will be led by the CFMEU and supported by Canberra’s union movement.

The following quotes are attributable to Alex White, secretary of UnionsACT:

“The proposed Secure Local Jobs Package is supported by Canberra’s union movement.

“It is a strong signal that ACT Labor and Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith are committed to using the government’s purchasing power to improve workplace safety standards and ensure compliance with the Fair Work Act.

“The truth is that forty percent of businesses in the ACT do not comply with their legal obligations under workplace laws.

“Many of these non-compliant companies are existing contractors with the ACT Government or bid for ACT contracts. Current laws do not allow the ACT Government to easily ensure companies comply with their legal obligations to workers.”
