Union members hold key to election outcome in Eden Monaro

Unions across the Canberra region are ready to mobilise thousands of members and supporters to dump the Turnbull Government and Eden Monaro MP Peter Hendy.

The official start of the 2016 election campaign comes days after a poll shows that widely-disliked Liberal member for Eden Monaro, Peter Hendy, would lose his seat.

The national union campaign, Build A Better Future, has been running in Eden Monaro for over a year, talking about the issues that voters care about: jobs, investments in education and healthcare, well-funded public services, and a plan to build a stronger economy that improves the living standards of people in this country.

The feedback from voters in Eden Monaro over the last twelve months is that Dr Hendy is deeply out of touch with everyday working people and the community. Dr Hendy has supported and voted for cruel cuts to the public service, cuts to hospital funding and school funding, he supported scrapping of penalty rates and he has voted for tax cuts for multinational corporations.

This is the wrong direction for Eden Monaro and the wrong direction for Australia. Unions will be urging people to put the Liberals last at this Federal election.

The following quotes are attributable to Alex White, Secretary of UnionsACT:

“The people of Eden Monaro deserve a local member and a Government that will put their interests first, create jobs, and fund health, education and public services with a fair taxation system.

“After three years of cuts, lies and broken promises the people of Eden Monaro feel betrayed Dr Hendy, and let down by Malcolm Turnbull.

“The local Build a Better Future campaign has hundreds of volunteers in Eden Monaro and Canberra.

“We’ve spoken to thousands of voters, and we’ll be out in the community over the next seven weeks with the message to put the Liberals last.”
